Charleston Yacht Racing

Sailing on Fate is great fun – whether it be a destination sail, blast reaching in 25 knots or having your 4 year old take you for a ride. But after doing this for a few seasons most sailors are keen for a new challenge – Racing! (actually we are yet to find a sailor who has become bored of just sailing !). Racing adds a whole new dimension to sailing and helps improve your skills in the boat as you have to react under pressure. It is also a great social activity where people can yell and scream at each other on the water – then have a beer and laugh about it after the race. We not only race but we win, we captured the overall winner of the summer series 2 in 2016, all with our guests on board. There is no other experience like it in our country!

Year Round Yacht Racing on Fate

Race On!

Here is one of our summer series races recorded from two angles.

Weekend race charters usually start around noon and last 3 hours.

Summer series races on Wed nights starts at 6:00pm, and were back to the dock at sunset.

Book early as this is one of our most popular charters and only 40 races per year!

“Sunset sail or race? Go for both!!!!”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013 on Tripadvisor

"We began with a romantic sunset sail and then Captain Dustin mentioned the Wednesday night races... my husband insisted then and there that we must take part! Though my husband has some sailing experience, I'm a novice and was hesitant to sign up for a race. Nonetheless, I'm really glad we did! I quickly found my sea legs - "ballast" best defines my role on the crew, i.e. I sat there and enjoyed the ride. :) The Captain, his handy first mate, and my husband raced their way to a first place finish!!!!! The best part of the race was that we could do as much or as little as we wanted - I sat there and my husband helped pilot! This makes for a great adventure, no matter one's previous experience, fitness level, or willingness to pitch in. My husband declared this the highlight of his three day sailing vacation in Charleston and has made me promise to go back again next year, if not sooner. I can very highly recommend Fate! A first rate experience and a guaranteed good time! Plus, seeing all the other vessels behind us as we sailed across the finish line was an added bonus! You will not be disappointed!!!! The Charleston harbor is known for being one of the best natural harbors in the South East. With nearly every day having onshore breezes in the 10-15 knot range, combined with flat water, the conditions are perfect for yacht racing. With over 42 races scheduled each year there is a yacht race almost every week.

Booking is based on the racing schedule found below. If you wish to participate, let us know well in advance as we book up months out. Harbor races are typically 3 hours long start to finish, offshore races can take all day or an entire weekend. The yacht racing rates are based on our standard harbor cruise rates and are private as well, only you and your guests and crew will be on the boat. Race starts are at specific times and those times vary throughout the year. In order to get you on the boat and ready for the start we need to depart the dock at minimum one hour prior to the start of the race, if we miss the start, we are out of the race. Many guests wish to leave much earlier to get some practice in, familiarizing themselves with the systems and to get the timing down right with their crew.

Most races take place in the harbor but many are offshore and can include multiple days. The cruising class we compete in is extremely fun to be part of, we race against many boats of similar size and some much smaller. Fate is equipped with standard cruising sails and an asymmetric cruising spinnaker allowing her to compete in any winds. As a guest aboard Fate, you can participate in the racing if you choose or just sit back, relax, have a glass of wine and watch all the excitement. Great for families and team building exercise for your business associates, your friends and family will remember the expeirence forever.

May, June, July & August is the Summer Series where we race each Wednesday night at 5:15pm for three hours, then get together at the Charleston Yacht Club afterwards for awards, $7 burgers, drinks and a little socializing.

In April, Charleston hosts the ever growing Charleston Race Week. With over 300 boats, 2,000 competitors, 300 volunteers, and the most Goslings Rum consumed at any regatta in the U.S., it is definitely the highlight of the racing season. Charter the yacht for the entire 4 days or take a half day sail offshore to see the big boats in action. Charter the yacht for the 4 full days of racing!

Every two years, Charleston hosts the start of the Charleston to Bermuda race. The 777-mile adventure lasts up to 6 days in the open ocean, and attracts boats small and large. Fate is available for charter on this race if you are looking for that ultimate adventure.

There are 6 offshore overnight races throughout the year, this includes overnight trips to Gerogetown, Savannah, and our favorite, Bohicket.
